Today, permission slips and a copy of the script for the Celebrate Culture: Our Tribute to Black History, came home. If you wish to issue consent for your child to be able to participate, you can do so online on the Permission Slips and Forms Page of this blog! Simply fill out the form after you have read the note and a copy of the script that is below it. Thanks!
Chat Room on Schoology
I have set up a chat room for the kids to use on Schoology in the writing course. I am hoping that this will build some camaraderie among the class and give those who are not as outspoken a chance to talk and interact with one another in a different way. I posted this video on Schoology for them to view so that they know the expectations.
The basic expectations are that they follow normal classroom rules (being respectful and nice to one another) and use appropriate language and topics when they do post to one another.
When they first began to use Schoology, I posted these Netiquette guidelines for our course, which are pretty much the same expectations for the chat room.
Our
online class is a great chance for you to get to know your classmates
even better and work with them in a different way. I expect you to
remember that even though you are online working and learning, this is
still a classroom and the same behavior expectations for in a classroom
have to be used here. We want everyone feel safe, feel respected and be
responsible.
Please
remember that when you are online, it is hard to tell how someone is
feeling just by the words typed without hearing how the person’s voice
sounds when they say it.
When you post something online, please remember a few rules:
- Use kind words. If you are not allowed to say it in school, do not say it online.
- Stay focused on the topic.
- Use school language only and no text talk like: LOL or BRB.
- Check for capitalization, spelling, grammar and punctuation. This makes your post easier to read.
- Do not type in ALL CAPS (like that). When you use all capital letters, it is like you are yelling.
- When you use information from a website, like a picture or someone else’s words, please tell the web address.
An Odd Request for Chairs
We are in need of 4 chairs for the computer table. If you have any folding chairs or other that you are willing to send in as a donation, I would greatly appreciate it. The chairs will help with making it easier for students to transition to computer usage when all other chairs in the room are filled as well as help out during small group instruction. Thanks so much!

More People Have been Working Hard on Tenmarks
Calvin, Briana, Jayden, Alayna, Brooklynn, Damarco, Dylan, Johanna, David, Kierra, Nevaeh, Adia, and Tia have all been using Tenmarks.com this week.
Even if there is no assignment, they can still practice different math concepts on the site. All they have to do is click what they want to practice like, "multiplication," "division" or "data and graphs" and then click "practice." It's just that easy!

There is a weekend writing assignment this weekend that is worth double points due on the 20th (6 points instead of 3). There will also be one due on the 27th worth the same number of points. There are also math assignments on tenmarks.com for everyone. If you do not have internet, please take your child to a friend's house, family member's house or even the library to use the internet to do the tenmarks assignments.

Black History Month Program
To conclude our studies of Black History Month, there is a program in the evening (5-6pm) on February 29th. Some students will be participating in the program and we will be featuring the work that we've done all month. We would love to see you there. Come to see what your child has done and learned!

Black History Month Quiz
There is a 3rd-5th grade take-home Black History Month quiz contest. The quiz has been sent home today. Students are to work as independently as possible. Have them do a Google search or www.searchypants.com/mrstiggs search for the key words in the questions. The quiz is due back by March 27th. It is not a requirement, but I encourage you to have your child attempt to do it to practice web-searching skills and to learn more about Black History. Extra credit will be given to all students who complete all or most of the quiz.

Already Started on Milestone #2
There are some people who have already started on Milestone #2 (some by accident, nonetheless, they've started)!!!! They have shown me some of their work on their outlines and most people have a good start with the information. So far, I've seen David's, Kierra's, Brooklynn's and Nevaeh's already. I haven't given them back to everyone with feedback yet, but it's great that so many people are not waiting until the last minute to get started on this milestone. It is a tough one with lots of information to include.
***As a reminder, please remember to use the outline template given in the State Project packet. The outline must have the correct number of sentences for each letter and Roman numeral.
I have also seen Brooklynn and Nevaeh's work on Milestone THREE already! How studious is that??? Again, it never hurts to plan ahead and start early. These early birds have the right idea.

Several people have been working on their tenmarks.com assignments at home as assigned: Tia, Lindsay, Calvin, Brooklynn, Nevaeh, Johanna. It looks good you all!
These assignments are meant to reinforce or supplement topics we've done in class or that they need more practice with learning.

Great job on the Schoology Nouns Quiz!
Calvin, Briana, Lindsay, Johanna, Nevaeh, Tia, Adia, Damarco, Brooklynn, Jeremiah, Satchel, & Jayden all did the first Nouns quiz on Schoology that was assigned yesterday and all scored 80% or higher! Great job! Alayna also scored 80% or higher on the paper version.
Milestones...a Reminder
When a Milestone is due, it must be correct on the day that is due when your child turns it in. If it is not correct (or not turned in at all), then s/he will have to miss Fun Friday and spend that time getting assistance from a teacher with completing it. This is why we encourage students to turn in milestones early so that they will have a chance to fix it before the final due date if anything is wrong with it. Many students (like Briana, Nevaeh, Lindsay among others) have taken advantage of turning their milestones in early and that has really helped them to be able to pass and participate in Fun Friday.
Milestones and Attendance:
Milestones and Attendance:
- Students must be in school the day before the milestone is due and on the the day that the milestone is due to pass.
- Additionally, the milestones are due at 8:30 on the due date. If your child is absent, it needs to be in the Schoology Exhibitions course dropbox by that time.
- Milestone #2 (outline, 90 points)-March 22
- Milestone #3 (visuals-Power Points, commercials, brochures, handouts, etc, 100 points)-May 17

Donations for Fun Friday (this Friday)
For this Friday I'm planning a fun event for my activity, but I need some help. If you have/can donate dominoes and/marbles to the class that you don't want returned, I'd appreciate it. You can also send in other wacky materials that you may have lying around the house that you don't want like old toy blocks, Lincoln Logs, funnels, CD cases, or other stuff.
For those of you who are familiar with Rube Goldberg machines, I'm planning on having the kids experiment with making their own. Think about the game, Mousetrap. That's one kind of Rube Goldberg machine. Here's a video link to explain what Rube Goldberg machines are: http://video.about.com/giftedkids/Build-a-Rube-Goldberg.htm You're probably familiar with them, but don't know the name.

Black History Month Lessons
We've been spending a great deal of time learning about how Africans got to the Americas this week. Please take a look at the prezis that Mrs. Drain created to teach the kids about Slavery Life in America and the Underground Railroad. We have had a lot of great conversations and questions about both topics. I think that the students are learning a lot!
Good Technology Report
Ms. K. told me today that Dylan had a great day in Technology class. He remembered a lot of information that she taught during the last class and volunteered a lot! She said that some others worked really hard on their projects.
One thing that she mentioned as a whole is that there were issues following directions that she gave right away. So we want to work on that as a class for next week's Technology class on Wednesday.

Coming Soon...Online Math Lessons
I am happy
to inform you that we will be using a new online supplemental math program -
TenMarks, which will provide your student with additional math practice.
TenMarks is
an online program that enables students to practice and master math concepts -
one topic at a time. They can work on direction from the teacher, or choose to
practice on their own, anytime. While they are practicing, TenMarks helps them
with hints on every problem if they get stuck, and gives them short video
tutorials to view if they need an explanation - really helping them grasp the
concept they are working on.
I have set
up each student with their own individual account, and loaded the math
curriculum for their grade into TenMarks. From the teacher account, I can
monitor and review their progress, and assign work and give them feedback.
There is
also a reward zone for some extra motivation where they earn certificates to
print out when they master a concept, and some educational computer games they
can play after they complete work.
ACCESSING
TENMARKS
Students are
able to access TenMarks from home to continue working on the program at their
own pace. To log in to their
account, students should go to http://www.tenmarks.com and click on the red
"Log In" button on the upper right corner of the page.
Next week I will provide students with their usernames and passwords so they can get started!

Please Help Lessen the Load
I am grateful for all that each family has done. There are some families who continuously bring in donations for the class, including snacks. However, if you are one of those families who does not mind donating snacks to the class and you have not been consistent with sending in snacks, could you please send some in. Thank you for your support.
Thanks for the Pennies
To all of the families who sent in pennies for the Pennies for Patients fundraiser, we are truly grateful. I know that David, Briana, Dylan, Tiyonna, and Lindsay in particular brought pennies in.
Caught making good choices!
I was out on Wednesday. Hopefully that is the last time for a while. I HATE having to be absent. Alayna, Brooklynn, Tiyonna, Jayden, Dylan and Nevaeh's names were all left in the note from Mr. Bassey because they had a great day on Wednesday! I'm so glad that they made good choices, followed directions and were helpful.
Thank you Briana and family!!!
I am so excited that Briana's family donated a brand new heavy duty pencil sharpener!!! YAY! Thank you so much!
Briana's family also sent in another snack for the class AGAIN. Thanks so much!

Math Unit 6 Test is Monday
Monday the class will take the Unit 6 math test. They are bringing home a review sheet that should prepare them well for the test. Problems 11 and 13 are not problems that they are expected to know, so they don't need to do them. Number 9b has a mistake, so they may skip that one, too.
Congrats! 3 People have Passed Milestone #1
We now have three people who have passed Milestone #1: Briana, Brooklynn, and Calvin!
Great work! The milestone is officially due on Thursday, Feb. 9th. I hope that everyone passes! They need three books and three websites.
