Chat Room on Schoology

I have set up a chat room for the kids to use on Schoology in the writing course. I am hoping that this will build some camaraderie among the class and give those who are not as outspoken a chance to talk and interact with one another in a different way. I posted this video on Schoology for them to view so that they know the expectations.

The basic expectations are that they follow normal classroom rules (being respectful and nice to one another) and use appropriate language and topics when they do post to one another.

When they first began to use Schoology, I posted these Netiquette guidelines for our course, which are pretty much the same expectations for the chat room.

Our online class is a great chance for you to get to know your classmates even better and work with them in a different way. I expect you to remember that even though you are online working and learning, this is still a classroom and the same behavior expectations for in a classroom have to be used here. We want everyone feel safe, feel respected and be responsible.

Please remember that when you are online, it is hard to tell how someone is feeling just by the words typed without hearing how the person’s voice sounds when they say it.

When you post something online, please remember a few rules:
  • Use kind words. If you are not allowed to say it in school, do not say it online.
  • Stay focused on the topic.
  • Use school language only and no text talk like: LOL or BRB.
  • Check for capitalization, spelling, grammar and punctuation. This makes your post easier to read.
  • Do not type in ALL CAPS (like that). When you use all capital letters, it is like you are yelling.
  • When you use information from a website, like a picture or someone else’s words, please tell the web address.
If you posts do not follow the rules, they will be removed.
